Sign makers are involved in all aspects of sign fabrication, from design to installation. They work for businesses, government agencies, nonprofit organizations and academic entities. Successful sign makers have skills in graphic design, silk screening and painting. Those who run their own businesses must have solid management, customer service and operations skills.
Design
A sign maker reviews a client’s sign request, makes design recommendations, and provides a price based on materials, sign size, and estimated time and labor. In their work, sign makers may use computer software or sign-making equipment to create backgrounds, lettering and artwork within the borders of the design. During this process, a sign maker might print out a mockup of the sign for the client to review or contact the client to make additional recommendations, such as changes to the lettering style or color.
Manufacture
Once the client and sign maker have agreed on the final design, the sign maker manufactures the sign. Sign makers use a variety of materials to make signs, including wood, vinyl, plastic and aluminum. For example, a sign maker might carve the sign out of wood; enter the design into computer software attached to equipment that will engrave the design onto plastic or metal; or produce stencils or silk screens for sign making. A sign maker uses hand or power tools to finish a completed sign. For example, he might remove rough edges or perfect the appearance of the lettering or art by hand.
Installation
Sign makers often perform duties related to the installation of the signs they create. For example, a sign maker might prepare the installation site and provide hardware, such as signposts or bolts, needed to install the sign. A sign maker may work with a variety of tools during installation, including saws, grinders, drills, punches or rivet guns. If the sign maker installs a signpost, he might also use a shovel or post-hole digger and concrete.

Leadership
Experienced sign makers often serve as sign shop or department operations managers. They supervise less-skilled and entry-level sign makers; monitor for safety hazards; and inspect signs before shipment or installation. They often hire and train new employees, perform evaluations, decide work schedules, and manage the budget and payroll. They also generate and manage work orders and a client database or files; order materials, services and equipment from vendors; and negotiate pricing and contracts. Additionally, they continuously review sign-making trends -- including new equipment and materials used in local, national or international markets -- to stay competitive.
